Best advice I can give a new monk is don't do it.

Ranger or Beastlord will serve you much better if you liek to melee, mage wizard or necro if you want to be a finger waggler.

For ANY class get a tank merc and they should level you to 65.

As for AA, if you are planning on being mainly solo or molo then stop at 51 do some AA, then stop at 55 anddo soem and then 59. After that maek sure to keep defensiev and other key AA maxxed.

If you are going to group, you still need AA, and shoudl keep defensive maxxed (as a melee) but they are not quite as imperative as they are for solo. Just don't do what I did with my warrior.... Went from 65 to 75 without working AA, as I was not tanking with him, then found out without defenive I was tissue paper.

EWIL!!! Glad to see you around. I thought about playing Project99 but I was afraid of how much my early leveling time would be dependent on grouping. Right now with a Merc it is nice to hop on and just solo for an hour or so when I want.

Eagles, thank you for the advice. The info about when to do AAs is what I needed to know. As for picking a better class I totally understand the reasoning for it. I am however stuck in the mindset that a Monk is who/what I am in EQ. I still have dreams occasionally about some of the more interesting pulls from way back (original PoHate, Triplets in NToV, etc). I also remember Kage (hope that name is right), a monk in <Reconstructed>, saying that any good monk is going to have a big ego. I am sure pulling has changed dramatically since I played but I used to love controlling the pace of a raid and I know I was part of the best pull crew on the server at one point along with Ewil, Ssilvarn, Charaku, and a host of others I will remember in a few minutes after I post.

Anyways this whole restarting EQ thing has been an exercise in nostalgia and so far I am glad that I have not been let down. It has been great to chat with some old friends and I have had the pleasure of chatting with some new people, maybe soon to be new friends.

As a random question, not that it matters right now, but are the old raid zones still locked? I am hoping to run through a bunch of old zones at some point and I really don't look forward to getting keys for things like Ssra, VT, ST, Anguish, etc. I assume with the added character levels it is easy to get most of them but I will never camp things like the shards for VT again.

just get some gangster to powerlevel you most of the way to level cap in like a day

Yeah the monk class has taken a few hits but... its still the right class for some folks. I would suggest a tank merc to oh 60ish and if you are a tad impatient you can be pled to 80 in no time before pounding out some (3k) AA. Also the sweet spot for cheap group armor was around 80-85. I am sure its gone up somewhat with the new expansion but since I have been out for awhile I couldn't tell you exactly what level it is now.

The exception is if you have a class that can PL your sorry butt through aa in which case stopping for aa too early is a bad thing. Rangers are great at pushing you through the first 8k aa

Pretty much all the old stuff is unlocked now.
One of the expansions a few years ago is linked to TimeA and you had to go though there all the time. One of the new zones they opened a few weeks ago is linked to Vex Thal, so everyone has to go through there at least once to activate the shortcut.
