My Niece, Kimberly has Leukemia

Greetings my fellow raiders. Recently began a very sudden and shocking time in my family's life. My brother's daughter, Kimberly, was diagnosed with Leukemia at age 7. We knew something was wrong when she would continually pass out for no apparent reason due to the anemia that the disease can cause. We do know that what she has is curable, and if its successful, the chemotherapy and perhaps even bone marrow transplants will be able to remove the disease for good (or at least it has in many cases, the doctor tells us). We also know that regardless of how this turns out, this will be a long and painful process for everyone involved. What is also an issue as well is the amount of money it will cost for the treatments. My brothers medical plan is going to pay for a lot of it, but after all is said and done, it will wind up costing us about 65,000 dollars. We are certainly not rich by any means and are struggling during the best of times. I don't see how we are going to make it through this without seriously putting us all in an awful position. It is all worth it to see that little girl get a solid chance at life though.
It is because of this, I must do something that I really hate doing and my pride normally wouldnt let me do. I must ask for help. If you are able to render any assistance with money, I can assure you, every dime will go to helping make Kimmy's life a little easier. I have created a donation button on a website with the aid of PayPal. We need a miracle twice over.
For those of you that do donate, please send me a PM and let me know so I can give you regular updates. Here is the website to donate- Please forgive the cheesyness of it, I am by no means a web designer and basically suck at using computers for more than word processing and video games.

Kitt, I know you are hurting, as any of us would for our niece, I will put Kimberly on my prayer list.
One avenue to research for assistance for your brother's family would be be thru the leukemia society. During this time of treatments - look for any local chapters of a support group of similar families going through this also. Sometimes knowing the stages or steps and reactions helps us cope with the conditions, albeit not easy but does provide us knowledge and may help, but not always, with the feeling of helplessness we have in helping a family member through an illness. I lost both my parents at an early age due to different cancer's - my heart is with you.

Neighbourhood lurker reporting in.
Three things come to mind for something an individual (we) can do. The first is obvious - make a donation. The second and third don't relate to your needs, but would relate directly to someone else's. Donate blood and sign up to the bone marrow registry.
Blood is fairly easy to come by. I have a few pints myself and would imagine you do too. It's easily stored, transported, and used. It's almost readily available in any hospital and can be used for anywhere from operations to emergencies to research. Even if you have a disease which prohibits you from donating your blood to someone else, your blood can still be used for something - research. The collective knowledge we have of the world means nothing if we can't get the data. Donating blood is stupid simple too. I speak from my knowledge of donating in Canada, where you can just sign up at a donation centre and go. And you get free juice and cookies!
If only the bone marrow transplant were as easy as donating blood. This one requires a donor / receiver match, and these matches aren't as readily available as a blood donation. Getting on the donor list is again, stupid easy. And considerably less painful than a needle in the arm. It's a swab to your inner cheek. That's it! I walked by a donation booth at university and they said "have 18 seconds?". Now I would be leading you on if I said the donation doesn't hurt. Unfortunately, it does. But your pain would save the pain of someone else. Hell, you may even end up directly donating to Kimberly.
You've got a donation by me, Kitty. Just get it all set up.

I can't tell you how much your support means to me. Many of you have known me for a very long time and know that I don't really get gushy as a matter of principle. I have always given blood to the San Diego Blood Bank since i got out of the Navy, regularly like clockwork. Once I get a page setup, I will immediately post a link here.
Every time I see Kim, It amazes me just how strong and willful she is even at 7 years old. She acts just like any kid her age. I know at that age I never would have grasped the concept of the difficulties ahead of me. She is an amazing and beautiful girl who loves Harry Potter and the Avengers. Thank you guys.
